Netflix Password Sharing - New Guidelines Revealed

Netflix's new password sharing policy tightens account access, allowing sharing only within households, ensuring better security and user experience.

Recent revelations regarding Netflix's measures to curb password sharing have surfaced, detailing the streaming service's strategy to manage account accessibility.

This information came to light through Netflix's US help center, which was later confirmed by The Streamable on January 31. However, the specific page containing these details has since been removed, reverting the help center back to its original format. Thankfully, a snapshot of the guidelines is still accessible via the Wayback Machine, a tool that archives web pages for future reference.

As outlined in the reports, Netflix accounts can still be shared, but this is limited to members of the same household. Anyone outside of your residence will be prompted to create their own account instead of accessing yours.

Furthermore, users will be required to log into their Netflix account using their home Wi-Fi, open the app, and watch content at least once every 31 days. This action will mark your device(s) as “trusted.” While it's unclear what consequences await those who fail to log in monthly, the indications suggest that their accounts could face restrictions, necessitating contact with Netflix for assistance.

Traveling complicates the situation a bit. According to the regulations, Netflix utilizes various identifiers such as IP addresses, device IDs, and account usage to ascertain whether a device is linked to the primary household. If you travel or reside in different locations for more than 31 days, your account may be subject to blocking. However, if you are on vacation, you can request a temporary access code from Netflix, allowing you to stream for up to seven consecutive days.

The number of devices that can be associated with your account is contingent on your subscription plan. The basic plans, both with ads and without, permit only one device, while the standard plan allows for two connected devices. In a recent update, Netflix has announced a change to its premium subscription service, increasing the number of devices that can connect from four to six.

This enhancement will also bring spatial audio features to over 700 of Netflix's top titles, including popular shows like "Stranger Things."

While Netflix has removed the U.S. page detailing these rules, information can still be found in their Costa Rican help center, albeit with some variations.

In Costa Rica, standard and premium users have the option to add an additional member who does not reside with them for an extra fee of $3 monthly. However, this added member must also be located in the same country as the original account holder. The core rule remains that users must sign in and access their account at least once every 31 days. This means that if you were to set up an account while in Costa Rica and then leave, Netflix would not allow you to bypass this requirement.

It's important to note that these Costa Rican regulations may not be applied to users in the United States or beyond Latin America, as Netflix seems to be taking a cautious approach in rolling out these anti-password sharing measures more broadly. We have reached out to Netflix for clarification on when these rules might be implemented in the U.S., previously speculated to start in March 2023, and whether they will be similar to those in Costa Rica.

Stay tuned for updates if Netflix responds with further information.
